The name New Zealand comes from the Netherlands. Our first European ‘discoverer’ was Dutchman Abel Tasman. We have a thriving Dutch community and Dutch cuisine is as important a part of New Zealand’s culinary heritage as the steak and kidney pie.
To get your Dutch fix, head on over to Dutch Delight in Birkenhead. It has a quirky interior filled with every Dutch stereotype you can imagine, from clogs, to Delft, to windmills, to tulips, and serves Dutch pancakes all day long. The food is hearty and authentic. Best of all, the portion sizes are generous for the small size. I imagine the large size could feed a family of four with leftovers.
There’s a Dutch shop attached to the restaurant. I love discovering places to buy new and unusual products and this shop certainly fits the bill – I’m not even sure I could identify most of the Dutch ingredients for sale here!
