By far the pleasantest culinary surprise on my trip around the central North Island was Mister D in the centre of Napier.
The name is inspired by the Rolling Stones song Dancing with Mr D and the names of two of the owners, who have an impressive hospo heritage.
This new and beautifully styled eaterie is a pleasure to sit in just for its architectural décor, which is a little bit Swedish industro-chic and owes something to a love of rock and roll and typography.
But to focus on the décor is doing a disservice to its fine fodder. They bake all their own bread and pastries and they make their own pasta – and I’d like them to know that it sure is worth it. The service is as slick as the building’s lines. Oh and they do a good coffee too. Thoroughly recommended.
