It’s the silly season – that of Christmas parties and dinners and get-togethers. Which actually doesn’t sound that silly at all, except that everywhere you go is rammed, and the quality of the food and service tends to suffer.
Cibo in Parnell handled the crowds with calm competence, and had great, relaxed service.
The food they served was also a delight. For a place with a reputation for creativity, I should have expected the unusual dishes.
My starter was the most startling: beetroot with goats cheese marshmallow and beetroot meringue. I thought the meringue (salty, not sweet) was a bit unnecessary, but the rest was lovely. The marshmallow was like a goats cheese mousse.
My main may have owed more to chefs trying to impress each other than the customer. The gnocchi plate included “60:60” eggs: eggs perfectly cooked for 60 minutes (yes, minutes!) at 60C. I don’t think I’ll be trying this at home any time soon.
The desserts weren’t quite as good as the main, which is a shame because, for me, that’s the right place for extreme creativity in a meal.
All in all, Cibo gets a 8.5 out of 10 from me.
