Spirulina – controversial because it has been touted as a superfood, and because it’s so weirdly, intensely green!
It took me a while to try it, but now that I have, I’m a convert. I’m not sure if it’s because I’m tasting the other great fruits they mix in with the spirulina or because the algae actually tastes good…
The science bit…
Like some animal fats, spirulina contains all the essential amino acids. Now, I’m no scientist (please jump in to correct me if you are!), but I understand that this is much more important than it might seem. Amino acids are basically where we get protein from. But they only work in combinations. (This is why, I’m told, the peasant foods of many countries include not one but two or more grains and pulses – it’s to combine their amino acids for better usability by the body. Think of pilaf, for example.)
So, it seems like a great resource to find a food with all the amino acids in it. People have considered applications like growing spirulina on long space voyages – it all sounds very sci-fi!
Anyone for algae?
Spirulina is traditional fodder in Central America and Chad, in Africa – more in solid form than within banana smoothies though! It can only be grown commercially in tropical countries, so I don’t expect Charlie’s gets its spirulina locally.
Drinks worth drinking?
I’m curious about just how much spirulina is in spirulina drinks. Is it enough to have a health benefit?
But the most important question of all is: which spirulina drink tastes the best?
I’m looking for input from spirulina drinkers here.
- Which is the most spirulina-ey?
- Which is lacklustre?
- Which ones have you tried?
- Which won’t you try again?
